Have you heard of Dalgona Coffee?

This highly Instagrammable and delicious whipped coffee drink was first popularized by South Korean influencers.  From there, it gained the attention of the entire world.  The incredibly simple recipe uses four basic pantry staples, making it an easy and fun project.

Did you know?

Dalgona Coffee is named after a Korean street snack that was popular in the 1970s and 80s.   Dalgona (달고나) , also known as ppopgi (뽑기), is a candy made with melted sugar and baking soda. It is pressed flat and a picture is stamped on it. Traditionally, if the eater can break off the outer part without breaking the picture, the vendor would give the customer another dalgona for free. The whipped coffee’s golden blond color is reminiscent of dalgona’s color, thus giving the drink its name.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 tbs instant coffee

  • 2 tbs sugar (can be adjusted to taste)

  • 2 tbs hot water

  • milk (or milk substitute)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. In a mixing bowl, add the instant coffee, sugar, and hot water.

  2. Whisk the mixture until it becomes a golden caramel color and forms soft peaks when lifting the whisk out from the mixture.

  3. Pour about 3/4 a glass of milk.

  4. Take the coffee mixture and gently pour it over the milk. Enjoy!

NOTE: The use of instant coffee is essential to the success of this drink.  Regular drip coffee will not work.
